The Great Pumpkin Showdown, 2008

Posted on November 3, 2008 by Grant Skinner

Keeping with our yearly tradition of squash mutilation here at, I’m happy to present this year’s Great Pumpkin Showdown.

We broke into teams of two, based on seniority, and hacked the crap out of a bunch of defenseless pumpkins while drinking beer, eating pizza, and gorging on candy. Also keeping with tradition, we made the most recent hires build out the pumpkin voting team.

This is our largest batch of jack’o’lanterns to date (five), and definitely our best voting app. Nice work freshmen!

Player 10 is required to view the app below.

We appreciate your votes, and any comments you care to leave about the pumpkins or the app.

If you’d like to check out past years, you can see them here: 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007

Nice pumpkins! How are you guys rendering that text in 3D so well?

The 3D is rendered with the Flash 10 API it looks like. And so the text looking as well as it does must be the result of the new text rendering engine on top of the 3D API. Fonts look amazing with the new text engine.

@ Dustin;

As nice as the new text engine is, we're not using it in this application. This is just a normal embedded font that happens to render really well, and we made sure it sat at a Z-index of 0 to avoid unneccesary bitmapping.

Thanks for commenting!
